A Community Shop for Downderry & Seaton?

When Downderry Stores announced it was closing on 4 September 2023, DaSRA convened a public meeting on 17 July when residents voted for a Steering Group of local residents to be formed to assess the viability of a community shop opening in Downderry. An important first step was to gather the views of residents on if/how they would use and/or support such a shop so a questionnaire was delivered to every household in the Deviock parish. This Survey will remain available for responses for some time to come - click below to respond.

In its first months, the Steering Group has developed its own website, Facebook and email system and a bi-monthly Newsletter , with funding from DaSRA's Community Fund. In Jan 2024, Downderry Community Shop was formally registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as a Mutual Benefit Society. Negotiations continue to secure a potential site that could accommodate a community shop. Click here to read  the latest developments and to view a first analysis of the Survey. A range of alternative sites in Downderry have been set up to offer essentials - newspapers collections; a range of groceries: post office outreach service; Nut Tree newsletter: Paul Bray Butcher delivery. Click here to find details

3 February 2024: From the Zone Steering Committee

As expected we have received confirmation from the Methodist Circuit that they plan to sell. As this is now formally listed as a Community Asset with Cornwall Council, it means the community have the opportunity to bid to buy the building protecting it for the future. The Zone steering group have unanimously voted to try to do this. We are pursuing a number of different avenues to help us to reach that goal.

In the meantime, the Zone continues to establish its place as a local community well being hub. We thank everyone for your appreciation and ongoing support of the facility. We are also very grateful for all the feedback we receive . This vital input informs our decisions and additionally creates an important evidence base of community support.

We are not closing and have no plans to close. The rich and thriving variety of activities at the Zone continue as usual. We will publish regular updates of progress in this exciting new venture, so watch this space.

In 2024 we will be working more closely with the Zone Steering Group towards securing the building as a Health & Well Being Hub for the community-run by the community. If you have ideas for any new such activities or would like to get involved in making all this happen please do contact me.Viv Parker
