DOWNDERRY STORES
When the owners of Downderry Stores announced the shop was closing on 4 September 2023, DaSRA convened a public meeting on 17 July when residents voted for a Steering Group of local residents to be formed to assess the viability of a community shop opening in Downderry. An important first step was to gather the views of residents on if/how they would use and/or support such a shop so a questionnaire was delivered to every household in the Deviock parish.
ts first months, the Steering Group has developed its own website, Facebook and email system and a bi-monthly Newsletter , with funding from DaSRA's Community Fund. In Jan 2024, Downderry Community Shop was formally registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as a Mutual Benefit Society. Following a wonderful and well attended community Christmas dinner, we are delighted to finally be fully back in the Zone. A great & varied array of groups and events are using the building and the footfall since reopening is well over 600.Many thanks to all who have offered to help and to volunteer.
Now that the Zone is in community ownership alongside the day to day,we can start to think about a long term vision. We really want this to be co-designed with current and future users so we need all your thoughts and ideas.
Initially we have an online questionnaire and welcome as many responses as possible. We have paper copies available at the Zone.
