CONSIDERATE BUILDERS’ CODE FOR DOWNDERRY & SEATON

We are fortunate to have many excellent tradespeople living and working locally and who are familiar with our community. Contractors from outside the area may not understand how things work in a rural community like ours.

In order to minimise any adverse impact that building works may have on your neighbours, and by summarising responses to a survey undertaken by residents in Downderry and Seaton, the following voluntary code has been devised to help residents start a conversation with prospective builders at the “getting quotes stage”. Responses reflected the importance of supporting builders in undertaking their work and stressed the need for friendly and polite communications between all involved.

Local builders, property developers and neighbours who are commissioning work are asked to seriously consider the following Code.

RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO:

  • Talk to your builders/contractors about the impact your project may have on your neighbours. It makes sense and is reflects your intent to be a good neighbour.
  • Have an open and informed discussion with your neighbours if it is likely that building works will impact on them.
  • Discuss parking arrangement for builders’ vehicles to limit impact on neighbours parking spaces

CONTRACTORS AND BUILDERS ARE ASKED TO AGREE:
• If possible, working hours should be between 8.00

a.m. and 6.00 p.m. on weekdays, including Saturday

• If working on a Sunday contractors should try not to do noisy work if at all possible. This may not be possible of course but worth bearing in mind.

• If it is necessary to block the road for more than 30 minutes, please tell local residents beforehand. Local social media outlets and notice boards can be used

• Please consider limiting the volume of radios. Sound really travels especially in the valleys.

N.B. For larger and more complex developments we would strongly urge that the National “Considerate Constructors Scheme”, “Code of considerate practice” Details can be found here; www.ccscheme.org.uk/resources/the-code-of-considerate-practice/ccschecklist2023
